Alt Protein for Good

Alt Protein for Good is a research project that examines the role of plant-based alternative proteins in advancing a more just and sustainable U.S. food system through the perspectives of experts across the field.

Developed by Stray Dog Institute between 2023 and 2024, this research convenes thirty-two voices from across the alternative protein and food system transformation landscape—including investors, entrepreneurs, academics, and movement leaders. Placing these diverse perspectives in dialogue, the report offers a nuanced picture of how the alternative protein industry and the broader food system transformation movement understand one another, and identifies opportunities for deeper alignment and collaboration.

Readers will find an exploration of key questions shaping the future of plant-based alternative proteins: how these innovations intersect with social and environmental goals, what barriers may limit their alignment with the common good, and where cooperation across industry, investment, philanthropy, and advocacy can drive shared progress. Alt Protein for Good illuminates pathways for the alternative protein sector to strengthen its contribution to systemic change as part of a wider movement for a more just and sustainable food future.
