Frequently Asked Questions

State of the Movement Survey is a global survey of organizations working to benefit animals farmed or caught for food. By participating, your organization helps the movement build an essential picture of the movement's financial resources and how they are allocated by country, animal, intervention, and intended outcome. Summary results will be published by the end of 2026 and shared with the full movement, including funders, to inform strategy.
State of the Movement Survey is part of Stray Dog Institute’s State of the Movement initiative. It builds on the earlier efforts of Senterra Funders, whose contributions we gratefully acknowledge.

We welcome responses from the following types of organizations:
Organizations whose primary work contributes to reducing, reforming, or replacing the use of animals in the food system. This includes unregistered/unincorporated organizations and organizations of any size.
Intermediary funders / regrantors are welcome to participate. Other funders will be surveyed separately.
Movement-supporting for-profits may participate, so long as they clearly engage in advancing movement goals beyond product or business activity.
Educational programs and farm sanctuaries are encouraged to participate.
The 2026 survey should be taken only once per organization.
-
Yes — intermediary funders and regrantors are encouraged to participate. Other funders will be surveyed separately at a later time.
When reporting your finances, include the funds you regranted to other organizations in your total annual expenses. The survey then includes a specific question asking how much of that total you regranted. For the questions about where expenses occurred, regranted funds should be counted in the country in which they are received, rather than the country in which the spending occurred.
-
Most organizations finish in 15 to 45 minutes, depending on size and complexity.
-
Before you start, please gather information about your staff size, annual revenue, and annual expenses. Expenses include capital expenditure and funds regranted to other organizations.
-
The survey is available in 130+ languages. Available languages can be viewed on the first page of the survey.
Google Translate is imperfect, and some formatting is lost, but we hope that organizations find the language options helpful.
