State of the Movement

A Census of Resource Allocation

Building on earlier research by Farmed Animal Funders, State of the Movement is Stray Dog Institute’s ongoing research initiative providing a data-driven overview of how organizations worldwide work to reduce, reform, and replace the use of animals in the food system. Based on Stray Dog Institute’s inaugural global survey of nonprofits, with future annual editions planned, the initiative maps how movement resources are allocated by region, animal, intervention, and intended outcome.

As a neutral, non-evaluative resource, State of the Movement:

  • Increases visibility into how the movement mobilizes resources
  • Fosters shared understanding among stakeholders
  • Informs strategic decision-making across the advocacy ecosystem
  • Supports critical reflection on the roles and contributions of different approaches
