Announcing: “State of the Movement” Survey Now Open

To build a stronger global movement on behalf of animals used for food, advocates need accurate, up-to-date global information about the resources available to nonprofits and how organizations allocate their funding by country, by animal, by intervention, and by intended outcome.

Stray Dog Institute is pleased to announce our new annual State of the Movement survey to gather this information, building upon the work of Farmed Animal Funders’ 2021 State of the Movement survey.

We plan to repeat this survey annually, enabling analysis of year-on-year changes and longer-term trends.

Who is eligible?

This survey is open to nonprofit organizations worldwide whose core purpose includes reducing, reforming, or replacing the use of animals in the food system.

The survey will be best filled out by each organization’s executive director, or another staff member with deep understanding of resource allocation and theory of change. We recommend gathering information about staff size, revenue, and expenses from the last fiscal year before starting the survey. It should take most organizations about 30 minutes to complete. We request one response per organization.

What Does the survey include?

Our survey requests information about each organization’s staff size, revenue, and expenses. For expenses relevant to animals in the food system, the survey asks for further details about allocation by country, by animal, by intervention, and by intended outcome.

Preview the survey in its entirety here.

How long will the survey be open?

The survey will remain open for responses through September 30th, 2024.

How will the data be used?

Survey responses will remain confidential and accessible only to Stray Dog Institute staff and vetted consultants. No individual responses or full data will be shared with funders or other movement organizations. Personal information (e.g., names and emails) will be securely stored and used only for future survey outreach or other data collection initiatives, but never for sales or marketing.

Summary results will be published on Stray Dog Institute’s website and included in the “State of the Movement 2024” report in Q4 2024. All efforts will be made to prevent the identification of organizations in the summary data.

We are committed to sharing the report with movement organizations in a manner which minimizes the potential for misuse by the incumbent animal products industry.

The “State of the Movement 2024” report will include the following uses of survey data:
